Dua for a Lucid and Beneficial Dream Experience in the Evening

Evening Adhkar
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5016

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ رُؤْيَا صَالِحَةً صَادِقَةً غَيْرَ كَاذِبَةٍ نَافِعَةً غَيْرَ ضَارَّةٍ

O Allah, I ask You for a righteous dream, a truthful one, not a lie, beneficial, not harmful.

Allahumma inni as'aluka ru'ya salihah, sadiqah, ghayra kadhibah, nafi'ah, ghayra dharrah.

When to Read

This dua is recommended to be recited just before sleeping, as part of your evening remembrance (Adhkar al- المساء). It's a beautiful way to set your intention for a positive and insightful sleep experience, seeking Allah's guidance and protection even in your dreams.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a clear intention before you lie down to sleep. It's good practice to also perform wudu (ablution) before sleeping, placing your right hand under your cheek as you lie on your right side, just as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to do. Having firm belief that Allah hears your supplications is key.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking a 'righteous' and 'truthful' dream from Allah (SWT) is a way of asking for divine insight, confirmation, or guidance. Dreams can sometimes be a part of prophethood, as mentioned in the Quran, or a source of solace and clarity. By asking for a 'beneficial' dream and seeking refuge from a 'harmful' one, you are essentially asking for dreams that uplift you, guide you towards good, and protect you from any distress or misguidance that dreams might sometimes bring. This practice aligns with the Sunnah of seeking Allah's protection and blessings in all aspects of our lives, including our sleep.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When any of you sees a dream that he likes, he should know that it is from Allah, and he should praise Allah and talk about it. If he sees a dream that he dislikes, it is from Shaitan, and he should seek refuge with Allah from him and not mention it to anyone, for it will not harm him.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 7045). While this hadith doesn't contain the specific wording of the dua, the principle of seeking good from Allah and protection from Shaitan in dreams is established. The mentioned dua is a supplication for a positive dream experience, complementing this general guidance.
