A Dua for Protection Against Evening Temptations

Evening Adhkar
Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5088

In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing on earth or in the heavens can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

Bismillāhilladhī lā yaḍurru maʿa-smihi shayʾun fī-l-arḍi wa lā fī-s-samāʾi wa huwa-s-Samīʿu-l-ʿAlīm.

When to Read

This dua is recommended to be recited in the evening, as part of the Adhkar (remembrance of Allah) before nightfall. It serves as a powerful shield against any harm, be it physical, spiritual, or the subtle whispers of temptation that often surface when we are most vulnerable, like during the transition from day to night.

How to Read

Recite this dua three times in the evening. Ensure you say it with sincerity and firm belief in Allah's power to protect. Focus on the meaning of the words as you utter them, grounding yourself in His dominion over all things. It's best recited after Asr prayer or just before sunset.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ informed us that whoever recites this dua three times in the morning and three times in the evening will not be afflicted by any sudden calamity. This protection extends to guarding against all forms of harm, including the insidious nature of temptations that can lead us astray. By invoking Allah's name, we affirm His absolute power and our reliance on Him for safeguarding our faith and actions, especially during the evening when our guard might lower.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abu Ad-Dardaa' (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "He who says: 'Bismillāhilladhī lā yaḍurru maʿa-smihi shayʾun fī-l-arḍi wa lā fī-s-samāʾi wa huwa-s-Samīʿu-l-ʿAlīm' (In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing on earth or in the heavens can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing) three times every morning, will not be afflicted by sudden calamity until the evening. And whoever says it three times in the evening will not be afflicted by sudden calamity until the morning." — Sahih Abu Dawud 5088
