Dua for the Deceased in the Final Tashahhud

During Prayer
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 998

O Allah, forgive us, our parents, our relatives, our children, and the believing men and believing women, and the Muslim men and Muslim women, the living among them and the dead. Indeed, You are the All-Hearing, the Near, the Responder of supplications. My Lord, forgive me and my parents.

Allahumma-ghfir lana wa li-walidayna wa li-athyalina wa li-awladina wa lil-mu'minina wal-mu'minat, wal-muslimina wal-muslimat, al-ahya'i minhum wal-amwat, innaka samiy'un qariybun mujibud-da'awat, Rabbighfirli wa li-walidayya

When to Read

This comprehensive supplication is best recited in the final Tashahhud (the sitting part of the prayer before the final Taslim) of any obligatory or voluntary prayer. It's a perfect opportunity to remember loved ones who have passed away, asking Allah for their forgiveness and mercy while in a state of intense connection with Him.

How to Read

Recite this dua after reciting the Tashahhud and the Salawat (Darud) upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, just before you say the final Taslim (turning to the right and left). Ensure you are focused and sincere in your supplication, directing your heart and mind towards Allah.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is incredibly comprehensive, encompassing forgiveness for oneself, parents, relatives, children, and all believing men and women, both living and deceased. By including the dead, we fulfill a beautiful aspect of Islamic brotherhood and sisterhood, remembering them in our supplications and seeking Allah's immense mercy for them. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to make extensive supplications, and this dua allows us to do just that, asking for Allah's forgiveness, which is the greatest of all requests.

Source & Authentication

The hadith describes the Tashahhud and mentions that after the Salawat, the servant should ask for whatever he wishes. While this specific wording is found in Sunan Abi Dawud and graded Hasan, the general principle of making extensive supplications for oneself and others, including the deceased, is well-established in other authentic narrations. For instance, Sahih al-Bukhari 838 mentions asking for refuge from four things after the Tashahhud: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabi jahannama, wa min 'adhabi al-qabri, wa min fitnatil-mahya wal-mawati, wa min sharri fitnatil-masihid-dajjal' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hell, the punishment of the grave, the trial of life and death, and the evil of the trial of the False Messiah). This indicates the permissibility and excellence of making supplications in this part of the prayer, including asking for the deceased.
