During Prayer
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 589

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hellfire, and I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave. I seek refuge in You from the trial of the Dajjal, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of life and death. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from laziness and old age. I seek refuge in You from asking You for knowledge that is of no benefit. I seek refuge in You from the trial of the heart, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of the grave. I seek refuge in You from the trial of wealth, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of poverty. I seek refuge in You from the trial of this world, and I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the Fire, and I seek refuge in You from an evil end. O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and richness.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabi jahannama, wa a'udhu bika min 'adhabi al-qabri, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatid-dajjal, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-mahya wal-mamat. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-kasali wal-harami, wa a'udhu bika min an akuna as'aluka 'ilman la yanfa', wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-qalbi, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-qabri, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-ghina, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-faqr, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatid-dunya, wa a'udhu bika min 'adhabin-nari, wa a'udhu bika min su'il-manqalabi. Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is specifically taught to be recited during the Tashahhud (the final sitting in prayer) before the Tasleem (the final salutation). It encompasses seeking refuge from various trials, including those that can lead to hypocrisy and showing off, such as asking for knowledge that doesn't benefit or being tested by wealth and poverty. Reciting it earnestly in this position of humility before Allah allows us to consciously seek His protection as we conclude our worship.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a humbled heart after reciting the Tashahhud and before saying the Tasleem. Focus on the meanings of each phrase, internalizing your need for Allah's protection. Imagine yourself truly seeking refuge in Him from these immense trials. This is a moment of intense connection, so let your heart be fully present.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a powerful means of seeking Allah's protection from deeply insidious spiritual diseases. Seeking refuge from the trial of the heart ('fitnatil-qalbi') is particularly relevant to preventing hypocrisy and showing off, as these often stem from a heart that is not purely devoted to Allah. By asking for guidance (Huda), piety (Tuqa), chastity ('Afaf), and richness (Ghina), we are asking for the inner and outer strength to remain sincere and steadfast in our faith and worship. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself recited this dua, indicating its immense importance in safeguarding our Deen.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to teach his companions to seek refuge in Allah in their prayer with these words: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabi jahannama, wa a'udhu bika min 'adhabi al-qabri, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatid-dajjal, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-mahya wal-mamat. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-kasali wal-harami, wa a'udhu bika min an akuna as'aluka 'ilman la yanfa', wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-qalbi, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-qabri, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-ghina, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-faqr, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatid-dunya, wa a'udhu bika min 'adhabin-nari, wa a'udhu bika min su'il-manqalabi. Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina.' (Sahih Muslim 589). The Prophet ﷺ instructed them to do this when one of them finishes the Tashahhud (before the Tasleem).
