Seeking Allah's Help in Addiction Recovery

Difficulty
Sahih HadithMusnad Ahmad 391

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is ever effective, and Your judgment upon me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed in Your Book, or taught to any of Your creation, or kept unto Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen which is with You, that You make the Quran the springtime of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a banisher of my grief, and a remover of my anxiety.

Allahumma inni 'abd-uka, ibn 'abd-ika, ibn amat-ika, nasiyati biyad-ika, madin fiyya hukm-uka, 'adlun fiyya qada'-uka. As'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw anzaltahu fi kitab-ika, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalq-ika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm il-ghaybi 'indaka, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jala'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is perfect for moments when you feel the grip of addiction tightening, or when you're facing a particularly challenging craving. It's also excellent to recite regularly, especially in the morning and evening, to strengthen your resolve and seek Allah's constant support throughout your recovery journey. Recite it when you feel weak and need to reconnect with your purpose.

How to Read

With sincere conviction, raise your hands (if possible, as is the etiquette of dua) and recite this supplication. Imagine the specific struggles you face with addiction and earnestly ask Allah to make the Quran, His divine guidance, the source of healing and peace for your heart and mind. Believe that Allah, in His infinite mercy, will respond to your sincere plea.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is comprehensive, covering many aspects of seeking Allah's help. By acknowledging Allah's absolute control over your life ('My forelock is in Your hand') and His justice, you build a deep sense of reliance (tawakkul) on Him. The request for the Quran to be the 'springtime of the heart' highlights its transformative power in bringing life, joy, and renewal, which is exactly what's needed in recovery. It's a profound way to ask Allah to replace the darkness and anxiety of addiction with the light and peace of His guidance.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'There is no one who has an ailment and says: Allahumma inni 'abd-uka, ibn 'abd-ika, ibn amat-ika, nasiyati biyad-ika, madin fiyya hukm-uka, 'adlun fiyya qada'-uka. As'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw anzaltahu fi kitab-ika, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalq-ika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm il-ghaybi 'indaka, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jala'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi, - except that Allah will remove his ailment and replace it with good.'
