O Allah, I ask You to enable me to do good deeds, and to abandon evil deeds, and to love the poor, and that You forgive me and have mercy on me. And if You intend to try Your creation with tribulation, then take me to Yourself without subjecting me to it. I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds which bring me closer to Your love.

Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'l al-khayrat, wa tark al-munkarat, wa hubb al-masakin, wa an taghfira li, wa tarhamani, wa idha aradta fi khalqika fitnatan fa tawaffani ilayha ghayra maftun. As'aluka hubbaka, wa hubba man yuhibbuk, wa hubba 'amalin yuqarribuni ila hubbik.

When to Read

This is a profound dua that touches upon our ability to do good, avoid sin, show compassion, and seek Allah's pleasure, even when we might be facing our own trials. It's particularly relevant when you feel overwhelmed by your own struggles but still want to be a source of good or help for others. Recite it during your personal duas, especially after prayers, or at times when you feel a need for inner strength and clarity to act righteously.

How to Read

This dua is best recited with sincerity and a focused heart. Raise your hands as you would for any supplication. Begin by acknowledging Allah's greatness and your dependence on Him. Express your requests clearly, understanding that you are asking for the *ability* to do good, the *strength* to leave bad, and a heart filled with love for the needy and for Allah Himself. It's a comprehensive request for inner spiritual well-being that reflects outward into your actions towards others.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates a complete request for a life pleasing to Allah. By asking for the ability to do good deeds and avoid evil, we seek Allah's guidance in our actions. The mention of loving the poor ('masakin') cultivates empathy and a compassionate heart, which is crucial for helping others. Seeking Allah's forgiveness and mercy is fundamental to our relationship with Him. Crucially, it asks for the strength to remain steadfast in faith, even when faced with trials ('fitnah'), and to die in a state of conviction. The ultimate request for Allah's love and the love of those who love Him, coupled with the love of deeds that draw us closer to Him, is the pinnacle of spiritual aspiration. This ensures our motivations are pure, even when we are trying to help others from a place of personal difficulty.

Narrated by Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to supplicate: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka al-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina. (O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and contentment).' And he used to supplicate: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka al-muflihini min amri dunyaya wa akhirati, la tukilni ila nafsi tarfa'ata 'ain. (O Allah, I ask You for success in my worldly and hereafter affairs, do not entrust me to myself for the blink of an eye).' And he used to supplicate: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'l al-khayrat, wa tark al-munkarat, wa hubb al-masakin, wa an taghfira li, wa tarhamani, wa idha aradta fi khalqika fitnatan fa tawaffani ilayha ghayra maftun. As'aluka hubbaka, wa hubba man yuhibbuk, wa hubba 'amalin yuqarribuni ila hubbik.' (O Allah, I ask You to enable me to do good deeds, and to abandon evil deeds, and to love the poor, and that You forgive me and have mercy on me. And if You intend to try Your creation with tribulation, then take me to Yourself without subjecting me to it. I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds which bring me closer to Your love.)
