Difficulty
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5900

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from being overcome by debt and from the domination of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabad-dayni wa qahrir-rijali.

When to Read

When you're feeling overwhelmed by a setback in your career, whether it's a missed promotion, a failed project, or general stagnation. This dua is perfect for those moments when you feel your efforts are not yielding the desired results, and you need Allah's support to push through.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely with full conviction. It's best to recite it when you are in a state of focus and humility, perhaps after your obligatory prayers (salah) or at a quiet time of reflection. Remember to make personal supplication after reciting it, asking Allah for the specific strength and patience you need for your situation.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua, taught by our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, encompasses seeking refuge in Allah from some of the most common and debilitating internal and external challenges. By seeking refuge from worry (hamm) and grief (hazan), we ask Allah to protect our hearts from despair. Helplessness ('ajz) and laziness (kasa) prevent us from taking action and moving forward, so asking for protection from them is crucial when facing career obstacles. Cowardice (jubn) and stinginess (bukhl) can lead to missed opportunities, and being overcome by debt (ghalabad-dayn) or the domination of others (qahr ar-rijal) are practical worries that can impact our professional lives. Reciting this dua helps us rely on Allah's strength, fosters patience, and guides us towards the right actions.

Source & Authentication

‘Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to invoke Allah during the night saying: ‘O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and Lord of the Mighty Throne, our Lord and the Lord of all things, the One who Splits the grain and the seed-bed, the Revealer of the Torah and the Gospel and the Quran, I seek refuge in You from the evil of all things You are grasping by its forelock. O Allah, You are the First, there is nothing before You, and You are the Last, there is nothing after You, and You are the Apparent, there is nothing above You, and You are the Hidden, there is nothing beneath You. Settle our debt and enrich us from poverty.’ And ‘Amr (one of the narrators) mentioned from Abu Salama, from ‘Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (ﷺ) used to say: ‘O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, from helplessness and laziness, from cowardice and stinginess, and from the domination of debt and the domination of men.’ He said: ‘And I used to recite this [dua] and abandon part of it.’ He was asked: ‘What did you abandon?’ He said: ‘I abandoned the saying of ‘our Lord and the Lord of all things…’ [because it was longer].’
