Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim 5743 (Bukhari), 2191 (Muslim)

O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove this suffering. Heal him, for You are the Healer. There is no healing except Your healing, a healing that leaves no ailment behind.

Allahumma Rabb an-nas, adh-hibil-ba's, ishfi anta ash-Shafi, la shifa'a illa shifa'uka shifa'an la yughadiru saqama.

When to Read

This profound dua is specifically taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for when someone is suffering from an illness, particularly one that is persistent or causes significant pain. It can be recited by the one who is ill, or by a loved one on their behalf. Recite it during times of intense suffering, or as a regular practice when facing a chronic condition. The emphasis on 'removing suffering' and 'healing' makes it particularly potent for ailments that are difficult to overcome.

How to Read

The Prophet ﷺ taught us to place our hand on the part of the body that pains and recite this dua. It's recommended to recite it with sincere conviction and unwavering hope in Allah's mercy. Begin by invoking Allah as the Lord of all people, acknowledging His dominion. Then, specifically ask Him to remove the affliction and grant healing. The phrase 'You are the Healer' is a direct affirmation of His power. Finally, the request for a 'healing that leaves no ailment behind' shows a desire for complete and lasting recovery. Repeat this seven times if possible, as is the practice mentioned in some narrations.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is not just a plea; it's a powerful affirmation of Tawhid (Oneness of Allah) and a direct request to the One who truly possesses the power to heal. By reciting it, we acknowledge that all healing ultimately comes from Allah, and that His cure is absolute and leaves no trace of sickness. It brings immense comfort and hope to the heart, reminding the believer that even in the darkest hours of illness, Allah is present and able to help. The Prophet's ﷺ personal practice of this dua highlights its significance and effectiveness.

Source & Authentication

The wife of the Prophet (peace be upon him), Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), reported that when any person among them had a complaint of illness, the Prophet (peace be upon him) would rub the body with his right hand and say the following Dua: 'Allahumma Rabb an-nas, adh-hibil-ba's, ishfi anta ash-Shafi, la shifa'a illa shifa'uka shifa'an la yughadiru saqama.' (O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove this suffering. Heal him, for You are the Healer. There is no healing except Your healing, a healing that leaves no ailment behind.) In another narration: 'When the Prophet (peace be upon him) visited a sick person, he would pray for them saying: 'Allahumma Rabba an-nas, adhhabil-ba's, Ishfi antash-Shafi, la shafi'a illa anta, shafi'an la yughadiru saqaman.' (O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the harm, heal him. You are the Healer. There is no healer except You, so heal him with a healing that leaves no disease behind.)' - Sahih Muslim 2191.
