Dua for Relief from Excessive Worry and Stress

Difficulty
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the subjugation of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahri-rijal.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere conviction, raising your hands slightly as you do. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, truly asking Allah to protect you from these afflictions. It’s best to say it in a calm state, but if worry is overwhelming, turn to Allah immediately. Consistency is key; make it a habit during your daily duas, especially after prayers.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a direct request to Allah, the All-Powerful, for protection against some of the most debilitating human experiences. By seeking refuge in Allah from distress (hamm) and sorrow (hazan), we acknowledge that true peace comes only from Him. Asking protection from incapacity ('ajz) and laziness (kasal) helps us regain motivation and strength to face our tasks. Seeking refuge from cowardice (jubn) and stinginess (buhl) cultivates courage and generosity, essential traits for a balanced life. Finally, asking for protection from the burden of debt (ghalabatid-dayn) and the subjugation of men (qahr ar-rijal) addresses significant sources of stress and humiliation that can plague a person. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself would often seek refuge in Allah from these very things, teaching us through his example.
