اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ غَلَبَةِ الدَّيْنِ وَغَلَبَةِ الْعَدُوِّ وَشَمَاتَةِ الأَعْدَاءِ
O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the overwhelming burden of debt, and from being overcome by enemies, and from the malicious joy of enemies.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa ghalabatil-'aduwwi wa shamatatil-a'daa'
When to Read
This profound dua is a cornerstone for anyone facing financial hardship or worried about the burden of debt. It's a prayer to recite daily, especially after the obligatory prayers, to seek Allah's protection from the crushing weight of owing others, which can lead to immense stress and anxiety. It's also beneficial to say when contemplating taking on a loan or facing unexpected expenses.
How to Read
Recite this dua sincerely and with full conviction in Allah's power to relieve your burdens. Raise your hands slightly, as is customary when seeking refuge with Allah. Focus on the meaning of each word: seeking protection from the *overwhelming* nature of debt, acknowledging that it's not just the amount but the pressure it brings. Also, recognizing the interconnectedness of protection from debt and from enemies, as often financial distress can lead to further complications.
Virtues & Benefits
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this specific supplication to guard us against the severe hardship of debt. The 'overwhelming burden of debt' (غَلَبَةِ الدَّيْنِ) signifies a debt that consumes one's life, causing distress, shame, and hindering one's ability to fulfill responsibilities. By seeking refuge from this, we ask Allah to provide means of repayment, ease our financial situations, and protect our peace of mind. The inclusion of seeking refuge from being overcome by enemies and their taunts highlights how financial strain can sometimes make individuals vulnerable in other aspects of their lives. This comprehensive protection ensures our overall well-being and dignity.

Narrated by Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): The Prophet ﷺ used to supplicate: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the torment of the Fire, and from the torment of the grave, and from the affliction of the Dajjal, and from the affliction of the living and the dead. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the overwhelming burden of debt, and from being overcome by enemies, and from the malicious joy of enemies.' Aisha said, 'We mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said, 'A supplicator supplicates with praises of Allah and praises of me, and he supplicates with the praises that are with Allah.' Then he said: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the torment of the Fire, and from the torment of the grave, and from the affliction of the Dajjal, and from the affliction of the living and the dead. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the overwhelming burden of debt, and from being overcome by enemies, and from the malicious joy of enemies.' — Sahih al-Bukhari 6306
