Dua for Patience: Seeking Strength from Allah During Trials

Difficulty
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6346

O Allah, indeed I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forehead is in Your hand (I am under Your control). Your judgment against me is inevitable. Your decree concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or have taught to anyone from Your creation, or have revealed in Your Book, or have kept to Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen with You, to make the Qur'an the spring of my heart, and the light of my chest, the banisher of my grief, and the remover of my worries. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, from incapacity and laziness, from cowardice and stinginess, from being overcome by debt and being overpowered by men.

Allahumma inni 'abdoka, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatika, nasiyati biyadika, madin fiyya huku-muka, 'adlun fiyya qadaa'uka, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka, sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw anzaltahu fi kitabi-ka, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm-il-ghaybi 'indaka, an taj'al al-Qur'ana rabee'a qalbi, wa noora sadri, wa jilaa'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wal-jubni wal-bukhl, wa ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a comprehensive plea that encompasses seeking Allah's help to transform distress into peace and worry into ease through the profound connection with the Qur'an. By seeking refuge in Allah from specific afflictions like grief, helplessness, laziness, fear, and debt, we are actively shielding ourselves from negative states that can hinder patience and perseverance. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to show us that even he, the best of creation, turned to Allah in times of deep sadness and overwhelming concern, reminding us of our own need for divine support. It fosters a mindset of trust (tawakkul) in Allah's plan, enabling us to face trials with a calm heart and a steadfast spirit.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Ibn Masud: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "If anyone recites it, Allah will remove his distress and replace his worries with peace." I said, "O Messenger of Allah! Should we learn these words?" He said, "Yes, everyone should learn them." (The narrator said) "I tried to recite it, but I could not master it. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'Do not mind, the one who recites it after his death will not suffer from hunger or loneliness.'" I said, "O Messenger of Allah! What should I do?" He said, "When you offer your prayers say: O Allah, I ask You by the request of those who request from You, and by Your attainment of (all) wishes, and by Your will to do whatever You will, and by Your praise of Yourself, and by Your awesome names, and by Your power, which makes it impossible for anything to resist You, and by Your light which fills the pillars of Your Throne, and by Your mercy which encompasses all things. (In addition) say: `O Allah, I ask You that You keep me in good health, and that You give me strong determination, and that You make me firm in my faith, and that You make me grateful for Your favor, and that You enable me to worship You well. O Allah, I ask You for a sound heart and truthful tongue, and I ask You for the best of what You know, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of what You know, and I ask Your forgiveness for all my sins. O Allah, grant me a usable knowledge and a thankful heart and a strong body, and protect me from the evil of those You have created, and grant me victory over those who are my enemies. O Allah, grant me a healthy body, and make my hearing and my sight sound. O Allah, grant me sound health and keep me safe from all afflictions. O Allah, grant me sound health and make me thankful for it, and grant me the ability to worship You and make me independent of Your creation. I ask You, O Allah, through Your noble face and Your glorious Throne, that You keep me safe from torment in the Fire (of Hell), and from the punishment of the grave. O Allah, grant me protection from the evil of the Day of Judgment, and from the evil of the Day of Judgment, and from the evil of the Day of Judgment." I said, "O Messenger of Allah! I did not master it." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Say: 'O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant. My forehead is in Your hand. Your command over me is inevitable. Your decision to do justice to me is inevitable. I ask You by every name that You have named Yourself with, or You have taught to anyone from Your creation, or You have revealed in Your Book, or You have in Your possession in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Qur'an the light of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a banisher of my grief, and a remover of my worries.'" He (Ibn Masud) said, "So I learned it and my mind was greatly improved."
