Dua for Overcoming Fear and Anxiety

Difficulty
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 391

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your command over me is ever effective. Your decree concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that You have called Yourself, or revealed in Your Book, or taught to any one of Your creation, or kept to Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen which is with You, to make the Qur'an the spring of my heart, and the light of my chest, and a remover of my sadness, and a banisher of my anxiety.

Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatik, nasiyatii biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qadaa'uka, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa lak, sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw anzaltahu fi kitabika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm il-ghaybi 'indaka, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jalaa'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is perfect for those moments when overwhelming feelings of anxiety, sadness, or worry grip your heart. It's especially beneficial to recite when you feel your thoughts racing or when facing a difficult situation that causes you distress. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to a man who complained of such feelings, showing us its direct application for alleviating mental and emotional burdens.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere conviction, reflecting on the meaning of each phrase. Focus your attention on Allah, acknowledging His absolute power and control over all matters. Utter the words with humility and earnestness, seeking His divine assistance to bring peace and clarity to your mind. It's recommended to raise your hands slightly while making dua, as was the practice of the Prophet ﷺ, though it's not a strict condition.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua directly addresses the root of anxiety and sadness by turning to the ultimate source of relief: Allah. By asking Him to make the Qur'an the 'spring of the heart,' 'light of the chest,' and a remover of sadness and anxiety, we are seeking spiritual and emotional healing through the divine guidance and wisdom found in His words. It helps to shift our focus from our worries to Allah's plan and His mercy, fostering contentment and resilience.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Mas'ud: We were with the Prophet ﷺ one day and he said, 'There is no one who has suffered any anxiety or grief, and then recited these words, except that Allah would remove his anxiety and grief, and replace it with joy.' He was asked: 'O Messenger of Allah, should we not learn these words?' He replied: 'Yes, of course. One should learn them.' Then he added: 'Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatik, nasiyatii biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qadaa'uka, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa lak, sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw anzaltahu fi kitabika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm il-ghaybi 'indaka, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jalaa'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.' (Allahumma inni 'abduka, ibnu 'abdika, ibnu amatik, nasiyatii biyadika, madin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qadaa'uka, as'aluka bikulli ismin huwa lak, sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqika, aw anzaltahu fi kitabika, aw ista'tharta bihi fi 'ilm il-ghaybi 'indaka, an taj'ala al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi, wa nura sadri, wa jalaa'a huzni, wa dhahaba hammi.) — Sunan an-Nasa'i 6761 (Hasan)
