Difficulty
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5067

O Allah, conceal our private parts and secure our fears. O Allah, protect our child with Your protection. In the name of Allah, I have trusted in Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah.

When to Read

This dua is recited by the husband or other family members for the protection of the mother and the newborn. It is especially pertinent during pregnancy and labor, but can be recited at any time for protection.

How to Read

Recite with sincerity and conviction, focusing on seeking Allah's protection. The recitation can be done individually or collectively. It is advisable to also recite Ayatul Kursi (Quran 2:255) and Surah Al-Baqarah's last two verses (2:285-286) for broad protection.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua encompasses seeking Allah's concealment for our dignity and peace from fear, coupled with a specific supplication for the child's protection. The initial part, 'Allahummastur 'awratana wa aamin raw'aataana', is a general plea for protection, often recited for oneself and family. The latter part, 'Bismillah, tawakkaltu 'alallah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah', is a powerful declaration of reliance on Allah, acknowledging that no strength or power exists except by Him, which is crucial during the vulnerable period of childbirth.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas that when the Prophet (ﷺ) was with someone on a journey, he would say: (O Allah, conceal our private parts and secure our fears. O Allah, protect us from before us and from behind us, from our right and from our left, and from above us, and we seek refuge in You lest we be destroyed from beneath us.) And when he would dismount to rest, he would say: (In the name of Allah, I have trusted in Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah.) (Sunan Abi Dawud 5067, Sunan Ibn Majah 3870. The context here is general travel protection, but the supplication for protection and reliance on Allah is universally applicable and beneficial for situations like childbirth.)
