Difficulty
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 918

"We belong to Allah, and to Him we return. O Allah, grant me reward in my affliction and recompense me with something better than it."

Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un. Allahumma ajurni fi musibati wa akhlif li khayran minha.

When to Read

This powerful dua is recited immediately upon experiencing any form of calamity, loss, or hardship. Whether it's the passing of a loved one, financial loss, illness, or any other unexpected difficulty, this supplication helps us to frame our perspective with faith and seek Allah's comfort and reward.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a heart that acknowledges Allah's decree. The first part, 'Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un,' is a fundamental statement of faith recognizing that everything comes from Allah and will return to Him. The second part is a direct plea for Allah's compensation and blessing during the difficult time. It's best to say it calmly, reflecting on its meaning.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua offers immense spiritual benefit by reminding us of our ultimate return to Allah, fostering patience (sabr), and seeking His divine recompense. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ promised that whoever says this when afflicted, and then Allah grants them something better, they will be rewarded. Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that when Abu Salama died, she recited this dua, and Allah granted her a husband better than him – the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself. This shows the immense blessing and transformative power of turning to Allah during trials.

Source & Authentication

Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: When any of you is overtaken by a calamity, he should recite: 'Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un. Allahumma ajurni fi musibati wa akhlif li khayran minha' (We belong to Allah, and to Him we return. O Allah, grant me reward in my affliction and grant me something better than it). Umm Salama said: And when Abu Salama died, I recited this very supplication which Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) had commanded me to recite. Allah then caused me to marry him (the Prophet).
