And do not pray [the funeral prayer, O Muhammad] over any of them who has died - ever - or stand at his grave. Indeed, they disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger and died while they were defiantly disobedient.
Wa la tusalli 'ala ahadin minhum mata abadan wa la taqum 'ala qabrih; innahum kafaru billahi wa rasulihi wa matu wa hum fasiqoon.
When to Read
The question of offering prayers for someone whose hypocrisy was manifest can be a challenging one. Our faith guides us with clear principles, and in this specific instance, Allah Himself has given us explicit instructions. This divine command applies when an individual's hypocrisy, disbelief, and antagonism towards Islam were evident and known within the community during their lifetime. For the vast majority of deceased Muslims, we assume the best and offer the funeral prayer. However, if a person was *known* for active, public hypocrisy against Islam and Muslims, or for denying fundamental tenets of faith while outwardly appearing Muslim, then this verse provides specific guidance.
How to Read
This ayah is not a dua to be recited, but rather a profound prohibition and a directive from Allah (SWT) regarding the conduct towards deceased hypocrites. For us as ordinary Muslims, we generally perform Salat al-Janazah for anyone who dies as an apparent Muslim, reciting the prayers for forgiveness, as only Allah knows the true state of hearts. We are not given the knowledge of people's inner hearts as the Prophet ﷺ was. However, if an individual's disbelief or severe hypocrisy was *manifested* through their words and actions in a way that aligns with the conditions described in Surah At-Tawbah concerning the hypocrites, then this instruction means that one should *not* perform the funeral prayer for them, nor stand at their grave to make *dua* for their forgiveness. This is an adherence to Allah's explicit command for those who died in a state of manifest disbelief and active hypocrisy, not a judgment of their ultimate fate.
Virtues & Benefits
Adhering to this divine command is an act of obedience to Allah. It underscores the severity of hypocrisy in the sight of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ. By refraining from praying for those who died as manifest hypocrites, we uphold the sanctity of our faith and the clear boundaries set by Allah. It distinguishes true belief from mere outward conformity and serves as a powerful reminder of the consequences of disbelief and defiant disobedience. This guidance emphasizes the truthfulness required of us as Muslims and the distinct nature of our community, which does not sanction or seek forgiveness for those who openly reject its core tenets while pretending to be part of it.
