โœฆ

O Allah, forgive [so-and-so], by Your mercy and Your grace, and admit him to Your Paradise, and save him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

Allahumma-ghfir li [Fulฤn], bi-rahmatika wa faแธlika, wa adkhilhu jannataka, wa a'idhu min 'adhฤbil-qabri wa 'adhฤbin-nฤr.

When to Read

This dua can be made at any time, especially when you remember the deceased. It is particularly beneficial to recite it after obligatory prayers, during the last third of the night, or on Fridays. Making it consistently, even after the initial period of mourning, is a beautiful act of continued remembrance and compassion for your departed loved one.

How to Read

Recite with sincerity and a pure intention, focusing on the mercy and forgiveness of Allah (SWT). Imagine the deceased before you and send this earnest supplication. Place the name of the deceased where '[Fulฤn]' is indicated. It's also recommended to give charity in their name alongside this dua, as good deeds done on behalf of the deceased benefit them greatly.

Virtues & Benefits

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) taught us that when a person dies, their deeds are cut off except for three: a continuous charity, knowledge that is benefited from, or a righteous child who makes dua for them. (Sahih Muslim 1631). Making dua for a deceased person, even if they did not repent, is a profound act of mercy that can potentially alleviate their suffering and elevate their status in the hereafter, by the grace of Allah. It reflects our connection to the Ummah and our duty to support each other even beyond this life.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'When a person dies, their deeds come to an end except for three things: an ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who supplicates for them.' (Sahih Muslim 1631). While this hadith doesn't specifically mention a deceased who died without repentance, it emphasizes the immense value of a child's or loved one's supplication for the deceased in general. Our supplication is an extension of their life and a continuous connection that Allah (SWT) can choose to honor with His mercy.
