Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 904

O Allah, forgive [Name of the deceased son of Name of his father], and raise his rank among those who are guided. And leave [a good legacy] for his descendants among those who remain. And forgive us and him, O Lord of the worlds. And widen his grave and illuminate it for him.

Allahummaghfir li fulan ibni fulan, warfa' darajatahu fil-mahdiyyin, wakh-lufhu fi 'aqibihi fil-ghabirin. Waghfir lana wa lahu ya Rabb al-'alamin. Wafsah lahu fi qabrihi wa nawwir lahu feehi.

When to Read

This supplication is specifically for making dua for a deceased Muslim. It is particularly poignant when praying for someone you know who may have been inclined towards worldly desires, acknowledging that everyone is imperfect and in need of Allah's mercy. It can be recited at any time, especially during gatherings for the deceased, on Friday, or after prayers.

How to Read

When reciting, replace 'fulan ibni fulan' with the actual name of the deceased and their father's name. For example, if the deceased was Ahmed, son of Muhammad, you would say 'Ahmed ibni Muhammad'. Focus on the meaning of the words, seeking Allah's immense forgiveness and mercy for the departed. It's a heartfelt plea for their afterlife, acknowledging our own need for Allah's grace.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua embodies the core Islamic principle of mutual support for our fellow Muslims, even after death. It seeks Allah's ultimate mercy, recognizing that the deceased, like all of us, may have fallen short. The prayer asks for guidance for their lineage, spiritual elevation, and comfort in the grave, demonstrating the profound interconnectedness of the Ummah.

Narrated by Awf ibn Malik al-Ashja'i: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) led the funeral prayer for a dead person, and I memorized from his supplication while I was beside him, saying: 'O Allah, forgive him and have mercy upon him, grant him security and forgive the lapses of his behavior, cause him to make a noble landing, and widen his entrance with water and snow, and cleanse him from sins as a white garment is cleansed from dirt. And give him an abode better than his former abode, and a family better than his former family, and a spouse better than his former spouse. And admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave (or torment of hell-fire).': 'Awf ibn Malik added: 'And until I saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) laughing.' And in the narration of Abu Kuraib: '...and widen his entrance with water and hail, and cleanse him from his errors as a garment is cleansed from filth. Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest) four times.' 'Abd al-A'la said: 'I said to Awf: 'What did the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say?' He said: 'He said: 'O Allah, forgive him and have mercy upon him, and pardon him, and honor his reception, and cause his entry to be spacious. O Allah, cleanse him with water and snow and hail, as a garment is cleansed from filth. O Allah, grant him a home better than his home, and a family better than his family, and a spouse better than his spouse, and grant him the entry into Paradise and protect him from the trial of the grave and grant him security.' And in the narration of Ibn Muthanna: '...and widen his entrance with water and ice.'
