Dua for Forgiveness and Mercy for the Deceased Who Struggled with Lustful Thoughts

Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 963

O Allah, forgive [Name bin Name]. Raise his rank among those who are guided. Grant his succession to those who remain. Forgive us and him, O Lord of the Worlds. Make his grave spacious for him and fill it with light.

Allahumma-ghfir li [Name bin Name], warfa' darajatahu fil-mahdiyyeen, wakhlufhu fi 'aqibihi fil-ghabireen, waghfir lana walahu ya Rabb al-'alamin, wafsah lahu fi qabrihi, wa nawwir lahu feeh.

When to Read

This is a general supplication for the deceased, and it is particularly poignant for someone who faced internal struggles. It can be recited at any time after their passing, especially during times of remembrance or when visiting their grave. It's also appropriate to make this dua during funerals and memorial gatherings.

How to Read

Recite with sincerity and humility. Replace '[Name bin Name]' with the deceased's name and their father's name. Focus on the meaning of the words, asking Allah for His boundless mercy and forgiveness. It's recommended to face the Qibla if possible when making such a supplication, though it's not a strict condition. Making dua with a pure intention is the most crucial element.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication is a beautiful example of the Sunnah for seeking mercy for the deceased. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this specific dua for a man who died, highlighting its importance. By asking Allah to forgive the deceased and make their grave spacious and illuminated, we are actively seeking to alleviate their burden in the hereafter. This act of remembrance and supplication is a Sadaqah Jariyah (continuous charity) for the deceased, as their good deeds are cut off upon death, except for three things, one of which is a righteous child who supplicates for them.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was asked what to say when someone died. He taught them this prayer: 'O Allah, forgive [Name bin Name]. Raise his rank among those who are guided. Grant his succession to those who remain. Forgive us and him, O Lord of the Worlds. Make his grave spacious for him and fill it with light.' (Sahih Muslim 963)
