โœฆ

O Allah, forgive [name of deceased], have mercy upon him, grant him well-being, and pardon him. Honor his reception, and make his grave spacious. Wash him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. Exchange his home for a better home, his family for a better family, and his spouse for a better spouse. Enter him into Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

Allahumma-ghfir li [name of deceased], warhamhu, wa 'aafihi, wa'fu 'anhu, wa akrim nuzulahu, wa wassi' madkhalahu, waghsilhu bil-ma'i wath-thalji wal-baradi, wa naqqihi minal-khataaya kamaa yunaqqath-thawbul-abyadu minad-danasi, wa abdilhu daaran khairan min daarihi, wa ahlan khairan min ahlihi, wa zawjan khairan min zawjihi, wa adkhilhul-jannata, wa a'idhhu min 'adhabil-qabri wa 'adhabin-naar.

When to Read

This supplication is profoundly beneficial for a deceased person, especially if they passed away without fully embracing guidance or if there's uncertainty about their spiritual state. Reciting it after their passing, during times of remembrance, or on significant occasions for the deceased (like the anniversary of their death) can bring immense benefit, by Allah's grace. It's a way for us, the living, to continue sending them mercy and seeking forgiveness on their behalf.

How to Read

When making this dua, it is essential to have sincere intention and focus. If reciting it for a specific person, replace '[name of deceased]' with their actual name, and use masculine pronouns if they were male, or feminine if they were female. It's best to recite with a clear mind and heart, contemplating the meaning and seeking Allah's infinite mercy. This can be done individually or as part of a group prayer for the deceased.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive supplication encompasses several vital requests for the deceased: seeking forgiveness (maghfirah), mercy (rahmah), well-being (afiyah), and pardon ('afw). It asks Allah to make their grave a place of comfort and spaciousness, purifying them from their sins as thoroughly as possible. Most importantly, it pleads for entry into Jannah and protection from the torments of the grave and the Hellfire. Even if a person lacked perfect guidance in life, our sincere dua for them, especially one so comprehensive, can be a means for Allah's mercy to reach them. The Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ taught us the importance of making dua for our departed brethren, stating that it is one of the acts that continues to benefit them after their death.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from 'Awf ibn Malik Al-Ashja'i that he said: The Messenger of Allah ๏ทบ led the funeral prayer and he stood and said: 'O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, grant him well-being and pardon him. Honor his reception, and make his grave spacious. Wash him with water and snow and hail, and cleanse him from his sins as a white garment is cleansed from dirt. Exchange his home for a better home, his family for a better family, and his spouse for a better spouse. And admit him to Paradise, and protect him from the punishment of the grave.' - or - 'from the punishment of the Fire.' He said: 'And grant him a place to enter.'
