Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 963

O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, give him security and pardon him. Honor his hospitality and make his entrance spacious. Wash him with water, snow, and hail. Cleanse him of his sins as a white garment is cleansed of dirt. Give him an abode better than his home, and a family better than his family, and a spouse better than his spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

When to Read

This is a general supplication for a deceased Muslim, and it is particularly poignant when the deceased has left behind debts. Reciting this dua after the person has passed away, during the funeral prayer, and consistently afterwards, especially on Thursdays or Fridays, is a way to continue sending them benefit. It is also fitting to make this dua at the end of any prayer or when reflecting upon the deceased.

How to Read

This dua should be recited with sincerity and heartfelt remembrance of the deceased. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, imagining Allah's mercy enveloping the departed soul. It is best recited standing, sitting, or even by one's side, with the intention of seeking Allah's forgiveness and ultimate reward for the deceased. When remembering the debt, the intention is that Allah's forgiveness and mercy would cover any shortcomings, including the worldly obligations that remained unfulfilled.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua encompasses several crucial aspects for the deceased: 1. **Forgiveness and Mercy:** Asking for Allah's pardon ('afw) and mercy (rahmah) is the primary request, as these are essential for passing the trials of the grave and the Day of Judgment. 2. **Well-being and Dignity:** 'Aafihi (give him security) and akrim nuzulahu (honor his hospitality) highlight a desire for Allah to grant the deceased peace and a comfortable reception in the next life. 'Wass'i' mudkhalahu' (make his entrance spacious) signifies ease and abundance in his grave and in Paradise. 3. **Purification:** The request to be washed with water, snow, and hail, and to be cleansed from sins like a white garment from dirt, emphasizes the need for complete spiritual purification before meeting Allah. 4. **Transformation of Abode and Family:** Asking for a better home, family, and spouse signifies the ultimate reward of Paradise, a place far superior to anything in this world. 5. **Protection from Hellfire:** The dua concludes with seeking refuge from the punishment of the grave and the Fire, the two most significant fears for any believer. Regarding the debt specifically, while this dua doesn't explicitly mention debt, it covers the general forgiveness and purification that would, by Allah's grace, address any earthly obligations. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also stated that the believer's soul is held back from good until their debts are paid, highlighting the importance of this worldly matter. Therefore, this comprehensive dua aids in seeking Allah's ultimate grace for the deceased, which would ideally include the settlement or overlooking of their outstanding debts.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from ‘Awf bin Malik Al-Ashja’i that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed over a funeral and he said: O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him. Give him tranquility and pardon him. Be generous to him and make his entrance spacious. Wash him with water and snow and hail, and purify him from his sins as a white garment is purified from filth. Give him an abode better than his abode, and a family better than his family, and grant him entry into Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave (or from the punishment of the Fire).
