O Allah, forgive [Name of deceased], have mercy upon him, grant him well-being, pardon him, honor his hospitality, make his entrance spacious, cleanse him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins just as a white garment is purified from dirt. Replace his home with a better home, his family with a better family, and his spouse with a better spouse. Admit him into Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.
Allahumma-ghfir li-fulan, warham-hu, wa 'aafi-hi, wa'fu 'an-hu, wa akrim nuzulahu, wa wassi' mudkhalahu, waghsil-hu bil-maa'i wath-thalji wal-baradi, wa naqqi-hi minal-khataaya kama yunaqqath-thawbul-abyadu minad-danasi, wa abdil-hu daaran khayran min daari-hi, wa ahlan khayran min ahli-hi, wa zawjan khayran min zawji-hi, wa adkhil-hul-Jannah, wa a'idh-hu min 'adhabi-l-qabri, wa min 'adhabi-n-Naar.
When to Read
This is the standard supplication recited for any deceased Muslim during their funeral prayer and can be recited at any time thereafter for their continuous benefit. It is particularly poignant for someone who struggled with patience in this life, as we ask Allah to grant them complete peace and ease in the Hereafter, far removed from the frustrations of this world.
How to Read
This dua is typically recited aloud during the funeral prayer (Salat al-Janazah) after the fourth Takbir. If reciting it outside of the funeral prayer, it should be said with sincerity and a heart full of hope for Allah's mercy. Replace 'fulan' (so-and-so) with the actual name of the deceased. It is a beautiful practice to make this dua collectively or individually for any Muslim who has passed away.
Virtues & Benefits
This comprehensive dua encapsulates all the essential requests for the deceased. By asking for forgiveness, mercy, well-being, pardon, honor, and spaciousness, we are essentially asking Allah to overlook their shortcomings and grant them the highest stations in Jannah. Specifically asking for purification from sins and replacement of their worldly dwelling and relations with better ones in the Hereafter addresses their spiritual and earthly needs. The protection from the grave and fire are crucial safeguards against the trials of the next life. For someone who was impatient, this dua asks for a state of absolute peace and contentment that they may have strived for, and perhaps found challenging, in this world.
Source & Authentication
It was narrated from `Awf bin Malik Al-Ashja'i that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) led the funeral prayer and I memorized from his supplication as he said: 'O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him. Grant him well-being and absolve him. Honor his hospitality and make his place of entry spacious. Wash him with water, snow and hail. Cleanse him from his sins as a white garment is cleansed from dirt. Give him in exchange a home better than his home, and a family better than his family, and grant his wife better than his wife. And admit him to Paradise, and protect him from the punishment of the grave.' He said: 'And from the punishment of the Fire.' I (the narrator) said: 'O Allah, forgive and have mercy on him and accept his repentance.'
