โœฆ

O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, grant him well-being and pardon him, honor his resting place and make his grave spacious. Wash him with water, snow, and hail. Cleanse him of sins as a white garment is cleansed of dirt. Replace his worldly home with a better home, his family with a better family, and his spouse with a better spouse. Admit him into Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

Allahumma-ghfir li-hu wa-rham-hu, wa 'aafi-hi wa-'fu 'an-hu, wa akrim nuzu-lahu, wa wassi' mad-kha-lahu, wa-ghsil-hu bil-maa'i wath-thalji wal-baradi, wa naqqi-hi minal-khataaya kama yunaqqa-th-thaubul-abyaแธu minad-danasi, wa abdil-hu daaran khayran min daari-hi, wa ahlan khayran min ahli-hi, wa zawjan khayran min zawji-hi, wa adkhil-hul-jannah, wa a'idh-hu min 'adhaabil-qabri wa min 'adhaabin-naar.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is recommended to be recited for any deceased Muslim, particularly when they have passed away during a time of great hardship or calamity. It is a beautiful supplication to make during funeral prayers (Salat al-Janazah), when visiting the grave, or anytime throughout the year when remembering the deceased. Making dua for them is a continuous act of charity, as the Prophet ๏ทบ taught us.

How to Read

Recite with sincerity and humility, focusing on the meaning of each phrase. Imagine Allah's immense mercy and power as you supplicate. It is best to recite this with conviction, asking Allah to envelop the deceased in His forgiveness and love. While this is a complete supplication, one can also add other personal duas for the deceased.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses the most crucial aspects of seeking Allah's blessings for the departed. It asks for forgiveness, mercy, well-being, and pardon โ€“ the pillars of a good end. The imagery of washing with water, snow, and hail, and cleansing like a white garment, emphasizes purification from sins. Asking for better dwellings, families, and spouses highlights the hope for an elevated status in the Hereafter. Protection from the grave and Fire are essential requests for salvation. This comprehensive plea reflects the Prophet's ๏ทบ profound concern for his Ummah.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from 'Awf bin Malik Al-Ashja'i that the Messenger of Allah ๏ทบ led the funeral prayer and he recited: 'O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, grant him well-being and pardon him, honor his resting place and make his grave spacious. Wash him with water, snow, and hail. Cleanse him of sins as a white garment is cleansed of dirt. Replace his worldly home with a better home, his family with a better family, and his spouse with a better spouse. Admit him into Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.' ('Awf bin Malik said): 'I said: O Messenger of Allah, should we say this on the day when the bodies are laid to rest?' He said: 'Yes, say it. Allah is the Exalted and Majestic.'
