Dua for a Deceased Disobedient Child: Seeking Mercy for Them

Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 963

O Allah, forgive [Name of the deceased], have mercy upon him, grant him well-being, pardon him, honor his reception, make his grave spacious, cleanse him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins just as a white garment is purified from dirt. Replace his home with a better home, his family with a better family, and his spouse with a better spouse. Admit him into Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

Allahumma-ghfir li [Fulān], wa-rḥamhu, wa-ʿāfihi, wa-ʿfu ʿanhu, wa-akrim nuzulahu, wa-wassiʿ madkhalahu, wa-ghsilhu bil-māʾi wa-th-thalji wal-baradi, wa-naqqihi mina-l-khaṭāyā kamā yunaqqā th-thawbu-l-abyaḍu mina-d-danasi, wa-abdilhu dāran khayran min dārihi, wa-ahlan khayran min ahlihi, wa-zawjan khayran min zawjihi, wa-adkhilhu-l-jannata, wa-aʿidhu min ʿadhābi-l-qabri wa-ʿadhābi-n-nār.

When to Read

This supplication can be recited at any time, especially after the passing of a person, regardless of their past actions. It is particularly poignant when you wish to seek Allah's mercy for someone who may have displeased their parents but has now returned to Allah. Making dua for the deceased is a continuous act of worship that benefits them in the grave and hereafter.

How to Read

Recite with sincerity and a hopeful heart, focusing on Allah's infinite mercy. Replace '[Fulān]' with the name of the deceased person. It is recommended to make this dua with a clear intention of seeking Allah's forgiveness and compassion for the departed soul. You can make this dua individually or as part of a group of Muslims praying for the deceased.

Virtues & Benefits

Making dua for the deceased is one of the most beneficial acts for them after their passing. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When a person dies, all their deeds end except for three: a continuous charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for them.' (Sahih Muslim 1631). This dua specifically asks for forgiveness, mercy, and protection from punishment, which are the greatest needs of the deceased. Even if the deceased had displeased their parents, Allah's mercy is vast and encompasses all things. Our sincere supplication can be a means for Allah to forgive their shortcomings and elevate their status.

Source & Authentication

When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was asked about the supplication of a righteous child for their deceased parents, he replied: 'Yes, indeed. The supplication of a righteous child is an addition to the deeds of the deceased.' He was then asked about the supplication of a righteous child for their deceased child, and he said: 'Yes, indeed. The supplication of a righteous child is an addition to the deeds of the deceased.' Then he was asked about the supplication of a righteous child for their deceased parents, and he said: 'Yes, indeed. The supplication of a righteous child is an addition to the deeds of the deceased.' And when the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ prayed over a deceased person, he would say: 'O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, our present and our absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whoever of us You keep alive, keep him alive on Islam, and whoever of us You cause to die, cause him to die on faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of its reward and do not cause us to go astray after him.' (Sahih Muslim 963). While this hadith is about the general supplication for the deceased, the core principle of seeking Allah's mercy and forgiveness applies universally, and the specific wording provided is a well-established supplication for the deceased.
