When to Read

This du'a is particularly meaningful when offering condolences to parents who have lost a young child. It can be recited when visiting them, sending a message, or simply keeping them in your thoughts and making du'a for them and their departed child.

How to Read

Recite this du'a with sincerity and a heartfelt wish for the child to be a source of immense reward and comfort for their parents in the hereafter. Focus on the meaning of the words as you speak them, envisioning Allah's mercy encompassing the child and the grieving family.

Virtues & Benefits

This du'a carries profound meaning for the parents of a deceased child. It asks Allah to make the child a 'farat' - someone who goes ahead to pave the way and intercede for their parents in Paradise. It also asks for the child to be a 'dhukhr' (provision) and an 'ajr' (reward) for the parents, signifying that their patience and faith during this trial will be a source of great recompense from Allah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this du'a to Umm Sulaym when her son Abu Dhabi passed away, and it brought her immense solace.

Source & Authentication

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (ﷺ) said to Umm Sulaym: "You have left your son for your sustenance, and the child has been pleased to be with you." Then he said to Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him): "O Abu Talha, how have you found your son?" He said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have found him well, as a result of Allah's will." They (Abu Talha and Umm Sulaym) wanted to please Allah and said to the Prophet (ﷺ): "O Messenger of Allah, give us a sign." He said: "Allahumma-j'alhu faratan wa dhukhran wa ajra" (O Allah, make him a precursor, a provision, and a reward). And when their son died, Umm Sulaym said to Abu Talha: "Allah has caused a thing to be entrusted to Abu Talha and Umm Sulaym, so they should be pleased with Allah and seek reward from Him."
