O Allah, forgive him, have mercy upon him, grant him well-being, pardon him, honor his reception, expand his entry, and wash him with water, snow, and hail. Cleanse him from sins as a white garment is cleansed from dirt. Give him a home better than his home, a family better than his family, and a spouse better than his spouse. Admit him into Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

When to Read
When we lose someone dear, our hearts ache with both grief and hope – hope in Allah's boundless mercy for the deceased. This comprehensive dua is a beautiful expression of that hope. The Prophet ﷺ taught us to recite it during the funeral prayer (Salat al-Janazah), and it is also highly encouraged to make this dua anytime you remember the deceased, whether privately or collectively. When you make this sincere plea, you are asking Allah to overlook all of their shortcomings, cleanse them from any spiritual stains they may have carried – including a lack of gratitude for blessings – and grant them the best in the Hereafter. It's a powerful way to intercede for them, trusting that Allah's forgiveness encompasses all.
How to Read
Recite this dua with full sincerity and humility, understanding the profound meanings of each phrase. When making dua for a male, use "lahu" (for him) and "hu" (him); for a female, change them to "laha" (for her) and "ha" (her) respectively. For multiple deceased, use "lahum" (for them) and "hum" (them). Focus your heart on Allah's immense mercy and generosity, believing that He is capable of forgiving all sins and elevating ranks. Raise your hands in supplication, if appropriate for the context (e.g., private dua, not during the *Salat al-Janazah* itself where hands are typically not raised for *dua* after the *takbirat*).
Virtues & Benefits
The Prophet ﷺ, our ultimate guide, specifically taught this dua, which highlights its immense value. By reciting it, we are following his Sunnah and seeking the most comprehensive blessings for our deceased loved ones. This dua specifically asks Allah to: * **Forgive and have mercy:** This covers all sins, known and unknown, including the subtle but weighty spiritual flaw of lacking gratitude for Allah's countless blessings. Allah's mercy is vast, and a sincere plea can turn the tide for the deceased. * **Grant well-being and honor:** Ensuring comfort in the grave and a dignified reception in the Hereafter. * **Purify from sins:** Likening the cleansing to a white garment washed clean, this emphasizes Allah's power to completely remove the effects of wrongdoing. * **Provide a better abode:** Promising Jannah and its eternal delights. * **Protect from punishment:** Seeking refuge from the torments of the grave and Hellfire. When we make this dua, we are not just mumbling words; we are actively striving to improve the deceased's standing with Allah, leveraging the power of supplication which can, by Allah's will, bring immense relief and reward to them.
