Debt
Hasan HadithJami' at-Tirmidhi 3563

اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِحَلالِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ، وَأَغْنِنِي بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ.

O Allah, suffice me with Your lawful provision instead of Your unlawful provision, and make me independent of all save You by Your grace.

Allahummakfini bihalalika 'an haramika, wa aghnini bifadlika 'amman siwak.

When to Read

This powerful dua is particularly relevant when facing financial strain, especially after taking on debt for marriage expenses. Recite it consistently after every obligatory prayer, and also at times of financial worry or when you feel overwhelmed by your obligations. Making it a regular practice, especially in the moments of quiet reflection after prayer, can bring immense peace of mind and a sense of connection to Allah's provision.

How to Read

The best way to approach this dua is with sincerity and conviction, understanding that Allah is the ultimate provider. Raise your hands in supplication, as is the practice of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and recite it with a clear intention. Focus on the meaning of the words: acknowledging that lawful earnings are a blessing and that true contentment comes from Allah alone. Believe that He will open doors of sustenance for you and ease your burden. Repeating it is encouraged, especially during the blessed times like the last third of the night or between the Adhan and Iqamah.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a beautiful encapsulation of seeking Allah's blessing in one's sustenance and protection from unlawful means. It fosters contentment and reliance on the Creator, which are keys to overcoming financial hardship. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) when he was facing debt, indicating its efficacy in seeking relief from financial burdens. By asking to be sufficed with lawful provision, we are essentially asking Allah to bless our efforts and guide us away from any haram means of income or expenditure. Being made independent of others highlights the ultimate goal of relying solely on Allah, leading to true peace and dignity.

Narrated Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): I was a man who had a lot of debt, so Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said to me: "Shall I teach you some words that you may say if you are in debt? If you say them, Allah will remove your debt, even if it were as big as Mount Sir."? I said: "Yes, O Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him)." He said: "Say: Allahummakfini bihalalika 'an haramika, wa aghnini bifadlika 'amman siwak."
