Dua for Repaying Debts and Seeking Allah's Pleasure

Debt
Sahih HadithJami' at-Tirmidhi 3563

اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِحَلالِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ، وَأَغْنِنِي بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ

O Allah, suffice me with what You have made lawful, instead of what You have made unlawful, and enrich me with Your grace, so that I may not need to ask anything from anyone other than You.

Allahumma-kfini bihalalika 'an haramik, wa aghnini bifadlika 'amman siwak.

When to Read

This powerful dua is perfect for when you are feeling overwhelmed by debt, facing financial hardship, or simply seeking Allah's provision in a lawful manner. It's a general supplication that can be made at any time, but it is particularly poignant during times of need and when actively seeking a way out of debt.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere conviction, raising your hands in supplication as you would for any other dua. It's best to say it after the obligatory prayers, or at any time you feel connected to Allah. Focus on the meaning of the words: asking Allah to provide for you through lawful means and to make you independent of His creation.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication is a profound expression of Tawakkul (reliance on Allah). By asking Allah to suffice us with His lawful provisions, we acknowledge His power over all resources and seek His protection from falling into unlawful means of earning or sustenance. The second part, 'enrich me with Your grace, so that I may not need to ask anything from anyone other than You,' is a plea for contentment and independence, freeing us from the need to beg from people, which is a source of humiliation. It emphasizes seeking provision directly from the Source of all provisions.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that a Mukaatab (a slave who had made a contract for his freedom) came to him and said: 'I am unable to pay my "work for my freedom" money, so help me.' He said: 'Shall I not teach you words that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) taught me? If you have the equivalent of a mountain of debt, Allah will pay it for you. Say: Allahumma-kfini bihalalika 'an haramik, wa aghnini bifadlika 'amman siwak. (O Allah, suffice me with what You have made lawful, instead of what You have made unlawful, and enrich me with Your grace, so that I may not need to ask anything from anyone other than You.)' - Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3563, Sahih Muslim 1051.
