Debt
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the overwhelming of debt and the overpowering of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabad-dayni wa qahrir-rijali.

When to Read

This powerful dua is excellent to recite regularly, especially when feeling burdened by debt, regardless of its origin. It's particularly relevant when the debt was incurred due to circumstances that feel beyond one's control, like a misunderstanding, betrayal, or unfair dealings, as it specifically asks for refuge from being overpowered by debt and by men (implying those who might cause hardship). Make it a habit to say it after every obligatory prayer, or at the start of your day.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction. Raise your hands as if making a genuine supplication to Allah. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, truly seeking Allah's protection from these specific afflictions. Understand that this dua is not just a request but a statement of reliance on Allah's power to relieve distress and overcome challenges, including financial ones arising from unfair situations.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates a comprehensive seeking of refuge in Allah from debilitating spiritual and worldly afflictions. By seeking refuge from the 'overwhelming of debt' (غَلَبَةِ الدَّيْنِ), one directly asks Allah for assistance in managing and clearing their debts. The inclusion of 'overpowering of men' (قَهْرِ الرِّجَالِ) is particularly significant when debt arises from deception or unfair treatment, as it implores Allah to protect the individual from those who might exploit or oppress them financially. It fosters a sense of reliance on Allah and can bring peace of mind even in difficult financial circumstances.
