اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِحَلَالِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ وَأَغْنِنِي بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ
O Allah, suffice me with Your lawful (provision) instead of Your unlawful, and make me independent by Your grace instead of from others.
Allahumma ikfini bihalalika 'an haramika wa aghnini bifadlika 'amman siwaka
When to Read
This dua is incredibly powerful for anyone burdened by debt, especially when that debt arose from the essential and costly need to treat a beloved family member. It's perfect to recite after each obligatory prayer, during the times when dua is most likely to be accepted (like between the Adhan and Iqamah, during sujood, or on a Friday). Whenever the weight of debt feels overwhelming, turn to this supplication with sincerity.
How to Read
Recite this dua with conviction and a sincere heart. Believe that Allah (SWT) is the ultimate provider and sustainer. Raise your hands in supplication, face the Qiblah if possible, and utter these words with hope and reliance on Him. It is also beneficial to follow this with specific personal supplications for the debt to be eased and for your family member's health to be fully restored.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua directly asks Allah to provide in a way that is lawful, protecting you from unlawful means or ill-gotten gains. It also appeals to His grace for independence, freeing you from reliance on people and their potential judgments or expectations. For those who incurred debt due to a medical necessity for a loved one, this supplication carries an added layer of heartfelt appeal, seeking relief for a hardship faced out of love and responsibility. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to his uncle Al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) when he asked him for something to help him with his debt, highlighting its efficacy.
Source & Authentication
Al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah, I ask for something." He said: "What is it?" He said: "I ask you for something that will benefit me." He said: "What is it?" He said: "I ask you for wealth." He said: "It is a difficult thing, but whoever Allah wills to be wealthy, He will make him wealthy. If you want me to, I can give you a sermon that will not leave any of your needs unfulfilled, and will not leave any of your enemies without success." Al-Abbas said: "This is what I want." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "O Abbas, O uncle of the Messenger of Allah, I ask Allah to make your sustenance lawful and pure, and sufficient for you, so that you will not need anything from anyone other than Him. O Abbas, O uncle of the Messenger of Allah, every day you must count the number of times you say: 'Subhanallah wa bihamdihi 'adada khalqihi wa rida nafsihi wa zinata 'arshihi wa midada kalimatih' (Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him, to the number of His creation, His pleasure, the weight of His Throne, and the ink of His words.)' for if you say it once a day, it is as if you have fought the armies of the world in the cause of Allah. If you say it four times, it is as if you have freed four slaves from the Children of Isma'il. And it is not permissible for you to ask anyone for anything. You should say: 'Allahumma akfini bi halalika 'an haramika wa aghnini bifadlika 'amman siwaka' (O Allah, suffice me with Your lawful provision instead of Your unlawful provision, and enrich me with Your grace, so that I will not need anyone but You)." - Sunan At-Tirmidhi 3563 (Hasan). Note: While the full hadith mentions other duas, the specific dua for wealth and debt relief is the one included.
