Debt
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5077

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the domination of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijali.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to his companion Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), directly addresses the fear of overwhelming debt ('ghalabatid-dayn') and the potential for creditors to oppress or exploit debtors ('qahrir-rijal'). By seeking refuge in Allah from these specific trials, we acknowledge His power to alleviate our burdens and protect us from unjust treatment.

Source & Authentication

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ saying this dua: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijali.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the domination of men.) Abu Bakr As-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: 'O Messenger of Allah, I have been afflicted by an issue of debt, teach me a dua.' The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said to him: 'Say: Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani...' (Sahih al-Bukhari 5077)
