Debt
Sahih HadithInvocations (Ad-Da'awat) 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge with You from worry and grief, from incapacity and laziness, from stinginess and cowardice, from the burden of debt and from being overpowered by men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wal-bukhli wal-jubni, wa dal'id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijal.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive dua the Prophet ﷺ taught us to recite regularly, especially when you find yourself burdened by debt, financial strain, or feelings of inadequacy in managing your affairs. Make it a part of your daily *adhkar*, particularly after your prescribed prayers. It is also an excellent supplication to make when you are planning your finances, seeking Allah’s guidance in making sound, strategic decisions, increasing your provision (rizq), and finding lawful pathways out of debt.

How to Read

Recite this dua with full sincerity and unwavering conviction in Allah's power to alleviate your difficulties. Understand the profound meanings behind each phrase – you are seeking refuge from both external pressures and internal weaknesses that can hinder your financial well-being. Combine your recitation with proactive efforts, like creating a budget, cutting down on unnecessary expenses, seeking lawful means of income, and consulting with trustworthy individuals about financial matters. Remember, dua is a powerful tool, but it should always be coupled with genuine effort and *tawakkul* (reliance on Allah).

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua, taught by the Prophet ﷺ, offers a holistic approach to seeking relief from hardship. By seeking refuge from **`dal'id-dayn`** (the burden of debt), you are directly asking Allah to lighten your financial load and provide the means for repayment. Beyond just debt, it addresses the emotional and psychological tolls of financial stress: **`al-hamm`** (worry) and **`al-hazan`** (grief). It also tackles behavioral obstacles: **`al-'ajz`** (incapacity) and **`al-kasal`** (laziness), encouraging us to be diligent in our efforts while relying on Allah. Furthermore, it seeks protection from negative character traits like **`al-bukhl`** (stinginess) and **`al-jubn`** (cowardice), which can prevent us from taking necessary steps or being generous. Finally, refuge from **`ghalabatir-rijal`** (being overpowered by men) covers various forms of external pressure, including overwhelming financial obligations or social burdens. Reciting this dua sincerely invokes Allah's comprehensive help for both inner peace and outer financial stability, guiding us to make proactive choices that align with His pleasure.
