Debt
Hasan HadithSunan At-Tirmidhi 3563

اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِحَلَالِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ، وَأَغْنِنِي بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ

O Allah, suffice me with Your lawful provision instead of Your unlawful provision, and enrich me with Your grace, so that I may not need anyone but You.

Allahummakfini bihalalika 'an haramik, wa aghnini bifadlika 'amman siwak.

When to Read

Recite this dua whenever you feel overwhelmed by debt, especially when dealing with a difficult or oppressive creditor. It is particularly beneficial when said after every obligatory prayer (Salat) and during the times when dua is readily accepted, such as the last third of the night or between the Adhan and Iqamah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to his companion Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) when he was facing significant debt, illustrating its direct application to such circumstances.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and complete reliance on Allah (Tawakkul). Focus on the meaning of the words, understanding that Allah is the ultimate provider and sustainer. Maintain a state of purity (Wudu) if possible, face the Qiblah, and raise your hands in supplication. Be patient and persistent in your dua, as Allah answers the calls of those who turn to Him.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a powerful supplication for seeking financial relief and independence from relying on others. By asking Allah to suffice you with His lawful provisions, you are seeking protection from unlawful means and from the burden of debt that can lead to hardship. It cultivates contentment (Qana'ah) and trust in Allah's plan, which are essential for navigating financial difficulties with peace of mind. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ promised Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that if he recited this dua regularly, he would be freed from his debt, even if it were as vast as a mountain.

Source & Authentication

The hadith narrates that Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have a significant amount of debt. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to him: 'O Ali, shall I not teach you a supplication that if you say it, Allah will remove your debt, even if it were as large as Mount Uhud? Then he said: 'Say: Allahummakfini bihalalika 'an haramik, wa aghnini bifadlika 'amman siwak.' (O Allah, suffice me with Your lawful provision instead of Your unlawful provision, and enrich me with Your grace, so that I may not need anyone but You).' — Sunan At-Tirmidhi 3563. At-Tirmidhi mentioned that this hadith is Hasan Gharib and stated that it is a supplication taught by the Prophet ﷺ to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) for debt relief.
