Dua for Protection Against Unforeseen Debt Accumulation

Debt
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5893

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the overwhelming of debt and the subjugation of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, is a powerful supplication that encompasses seeking refuge from several significant troubles. Specifically, the part 'wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal' (and I seek refuge in You from the overwhelming of debt and the subjugation of men) directly addresses the fear of accumulating unmanageable debt and the humiliation that can come with it. By seeking refuge in Allah, we acknowledge His power over all matters and trust in His plan to protect us from such hardships.

Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri: The Prophet (ﷺ) entered the mosque. He saw a man from amongst the Ansar called Abu Umamah. He asked: "O Abu Umamah, why are you sitting in the mosque when it is not the time for prayer?" He replied: "It is due to distress and debts that have burdened me, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Shall I not teach you words with which, if you utter them, Allah will remove your distress and pay your debt?" He said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Say in the morning and in the evening: Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal."
