Debt
Sahih HadithInvocations 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, from incapacity and laziness, from stinginess and cowardice, from the burden of debt and from being overpowered by men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wal-bukhli wal-jubni, wa dala'id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijal.

When to Read

This powerful dua is particularly fitting for times when you feel overwhelmed by financial burdens, worries, and the challenging circumstances of unemployment. The Prophet ﷺ taught us to recite it consistently, especially in the mornings and evenings. However, you can make this dua at any time you feel the weight of debt and distress, seeking Allah's immediate relief and provision. It's a comprehensive plea for protection from both external pressures (debt, being overpowered by creditors) and internal struggles (worry, grief, laziness).

How to Read

Approach this dua with **sincerity and conviction**, understanding the profound meanings of each phrase. Reflect on the specific worries and burdens you carry, truly seeking Allah's refuge from them. Make sure your heart is present, recognizing that only Allah can remove these difficulties. Recite it with humility, firmly believing in Allah's power to provide and ease your affairs. While making this dua, combine your supplications with consistent efforts to find employment, manage your finances, and fulfill your obligations to the best of your ability.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua carries immense benefit due to its comprehensive nature, seeking refuge from a spectrum of hardships that often accompany unemployment and debt—emotional, physical, and financial. The Prophet ﷺ himself frequently recited this supplication, highlighting its profound importance. A powerful illustration of this dua's effectiveness comes from the story of Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him). Once, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ found him in the mosque at a time not designated for prayer. When asked why he was there, Abu Umamah responded, 'Worries that have overwhelmed me and debts, O Messenger of Allah.' The Prophet ﷺ then taught him to recite this very dua (or a very similar version of it) in the morning and evening, promising that Allah would remove his worries and settle his debts. Abu Umamah later testified that after he consistently recited it, Allah indeed removed his worries and settled his debts. (Sunan Abi Dawud 1550, graded Hasan by Al-Albani). By making this dua, you are not only following a beautiful Sunnah but also invoking Allah's direct help in your financial struggles, trusting in His promise to ease your burdens.

Narrated Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet ﷺ used to say, "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, from incapacity and laziness, from stinginess and cowardice, from the burden of debt and from being overpowered by men." (Sahih al-Bukhari 6369) For further context on its effectiveness, particularly for debt and worry, consider the narration from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ once entered the mosque and saw a man named Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) sitting there. He ﷺ asked, "Why are you sitting in the mosque when it is not the time for prayer?" Abu Umamah replied, "Worries that have overwhelmed me and debts, O Messenger of Allah." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Shall I not teach you words which, if you say them, Allah will remove your worries and settle your debts?" Abu Umamah said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." The Prophet ﷺ then instructed him to say: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wal-bukhli wal-jubni, wa dal'id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijal.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, from incapacity and laziness, from stinginess and cowardice, from the burden of debt and from being overpowered by men). Abu Umamah later narrated, "I did that, and Allah removed my worries and settled my debts." (Sunan Abi Dawud 1550, graded Hasan by Al-Albani)
