O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from weakness and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the overpowering of men.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijali.
When to Read
This powerful supplication is perfect for reciting daily, especially when facing financial worries or the pressure of debt. It's also a vital dua to make during times of distress, when seeking Allah's protection from overwhelming circumstances, including the fear of falling into debt and being overcome by others.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, understanding the profound meanings behind each phrase. Raise your hands as you begin, a sign of earnest pleading. Focus on seeking Allah's protection and relief from the burdens mentioned. It is best to recite it after the obligatory prayers or during the times when duas are more readily accepted, such as the last third of the night or between the Adhan and Iqamah.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua directly addresses multiple anxieties that plague individuals, including financial hardship and the fear of being indebted. By seeking refuge in Allah from the burden of debt ('ghalabatid-dayn') and the overpowering of men ('qahrir-rijal'), we are asking for divine intervention to prevent us from falling into such difficult situations. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself, despite his impeccable character and reliance on Allah, made this dua, demonstrating its importance in seeking Allah's comprehensive protection and ensuring our affairs are handled with His mercy, both in this life and the next, especially on the Day of Judgment.

‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to teach them to say this invocation in that situation (i.e. when praying for guidance in all matters): 'O Allah, I ask for goodness, and its blessings, and its success, and its light, and its guidance, and its blessing, and its protection from evil, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of them and their evil deeds.' He used to teach them to seek refuge in Allah from the Hell fire and the punishment of the grave, and he used to teach them to say: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, from weakness and laziness, from cowardice and stinginess, from the burden of debt and the overpowering of men.' And he would say: 'Say: O Allah, I have wronged myself greatly, and none can forgive sins except You. So, forgive me with Your forgiveness and have mercy on me. Verily, You are the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.'
