Dua for Debt Relief and Seeking Forgiveness for Financial Sins

Debt
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5403

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the subjugation of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijali.

When to Read

This powerful dua is comprehensive and can be recited at any time, especially during moments of distress, worry, or when facing significant debt. It's particularly beneficial to make it a regular part of your morning and evening supplications (Adhkar) as taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, ensuring you consistently turn to Allah for protection against financial burdens and the hardship they bring.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, raising your hands slightly as a sign of supplication. Understand the meaning of each phrase and internalize the reliance on Allah for relief. It is recommended to say it regularly, especially when facing financial worries. Ensuring you are in a state of purity (Wudu) is also a good etiquette when making dua, though not strictly mandatory for all supplications.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua offers immense spiritual and practical benefits. By seeking refuge in Allah from the burden of debt ('ghalabatid-dayn'), we acknowledge that ultimate relief comes from Him. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who recited this dua, was known to be free from its effects. It not only seeks protection from overwhelming debt but also from the 'subjugation of men' ('qahrir-rijal'), which can occur when one is indebted to others and their freedom is compromised. This dua helps foster a mindset of reliance on Allah, rather than despair, and encourages us to seek His aid in all our affairs, including our financial well-being.
