Dua for Debt Relief and Restoration of Honor and Dignity

Debt
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the overwhelming of debt and the subjugation of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijali.

When to Read

This powerful dua is especially relevant when feeling the weight of debt or facing circumstances that threaten one's honor and dignity. It can be recited at any time, but is particularly potent during the times when supplications are more readily answered, such as after the obligatory prayers, in the last third of the night, or during times of hardship.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a firm belief in Allah's ability to alleviate your burdens. Raise your hands as you make dua, as this is a sign of humility and reliance on Allah. It's also beneficial to combine this dua with sincere repentance and taking practical steps towards resolving your financial difficulties, like seeking help or making a repayment plan.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a comprehensive shield against various afflictions. Specifically concerning debt, it directly asks for refuge from the 'overwhelming of debt' (ghalabatid-dayn), which implies not just the financial burden but also the emotional and social pressures that come with it. Seeking refuge from the 'subjugation of men' (qahrir-rijal) is directly linked to restoring honor and dignity, as being indebted and unable to meet obligations can lead to being looked down upon or controlled by creditors or others. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to his companions, indicating its profound importance for well-being and protection.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to seek refuge in Allah from these matters, saying: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijali.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the overwhelming of debt and the subjugation of men.) - Sahih al-Bukhari 6369. Another narration includes: 'wa a'udhu bika min dal'id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijal' (and I seek refuge in You from the evil of debt and the overpowering of men) - Sahih al-Bukhari 7349.
