Debt
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the overwhelming of debt and the subjugation of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, understanding its profound meaning. Focus on the words and the reliance they place on Allah. It's recommended to raise your hands slightly while making this supplication after your prayers, just as you would for other duas.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua offers comprehensive protection. It seeks refuge from the mental and emotional distress (anxiety and sorrow) that often accompanies debt, as well as the physical and spiritual lethargy (incapacity and laziness) that can prevent one from finding solutions. Furthermore, it shields against the character flaws (cowardice and stinginess) that might hinder one's efforts towards financial stability. Most importantly, it specifically asks for protection from the overwhelming burden of debt itself and the humiliation or difficulty ('subjugation of men') that can arise from it.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Anas: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to say, 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, helplessness and laziness, cowardice and miserliness, the oppression of debt, and subduing by men. (Worry and grief refers to the fear of a bad thing, while helplessness and laziness refer to the inability to do things, and cowardice and miserliness refer to the inability to spend.
