O Allah, I seek refuge in You from grief and sadness, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the overwhelming of debt and the subjugation of men.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijali.
When to Read
This powerful supplication is particularly relevant when feeling overwhelmed by financial burdens, facing the prospect of debt, or when worried about falling into debt. Recite it regularly, especially after obligatory prayers, and at times of personal supplication (du'a). It's a proactive measure against the anxieties that debt can bring and a plea for protection against its oppressive weight.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincere intention and conviction. Raise your hands in supplication as was the practice of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Focus on seeking Allah's refuge and acknowledge that true relief and protection come only from Him. It is also beneficial to pair this dua with striving to improve one's financial situation through permissible means and avoiding unnecessary debt.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua offers profound spiritual and practical benefits. By seeking refuge in Allah from the 'overwhelming of debt' (ghalabatid-dayn), we acknowledge His power to alleviate our burdens and protect us from the crippling effects of excessive debt. Seeking refuge from 'the subjugation of men' (qahrir-rijal) protects us from the humiliation and pressure often associated with being indebted to others, especially in exploitative lending situations. It fosters a sense of reliance on Allah and can open doors to permissible and beneficial financial solutions.
