Debt
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from being overwhelmed by debt and from the domination of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijali.

When to Read

This powerful dua is an excellent supplication to recite regularly, especially when facing financial difficulties or the burden of debt. It's particularly beneficial to say it in the morning and evening, as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to do, seeking Allah's protection from overwhelming troubles. Recite it with sincerity when you feel the weight of debt or are worried about falling into exploitative practices.

How to Read

Recite this dua with a sincere heart and conviction, understanding the meaning behind each phrase. It's best to raise your hands slightly, as is customary when making dua. Focus on seeking Allah's help and acknowledging His power to relieve you of your burdens and protect you. Maintain a state of ritual purity if possible, though it's not a strict condition for this supplication.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua offers a profound spiritual shield. By seeking refuge in Allah from 'ghalabatid-dayn' (being overwhelmed by debt), we acknowledge that the ultimate solution lies with Him. The phrase 'qahrir-rijal' (domination of men) encompasses protection from being exploited or oppressed by others, including lenders who might charge exorbitant interest or engage in unfair practices. This hadith, as recited by the Prophet ﷺ, demonstrates the importance of actively seeking Allah's protection against worldly trials that can affect our peace and well-being.
