O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and from being overcome by men (i.e., by others).

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min daradh-dha'ni wa ghalabatir-rijal

When to Read

This dua is perfect for reciting anytime, but especially when you feel the weight of debt, or are facing financial hardship and uncertainty. It’s a proactive supplication, seeking Allah’s protection before the situation becomes overwhelming. Make it a regular part of your morning and evening supplications, or recite it whenever you feel anxious about your financial state.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a deep sense of reliance on Allah. Place your hand on your chest, feel the weight of your worries, and then raise your hands in supplication, seeking Allah’s help. Be certain that Allah hears you. It's also beneficial to combine this with seeking lawful means to improve your financial situation, like working diligently and managing your finances wisely.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this specific dua to protect us from two significant worldly trials: the burden of debt and being subjugated by others. Debt can weigh heavily on a person's heart and mind, affecting their peace and well-being. Seeking refuge in Allah from its burden is a way of entrusting this matter to Him. Being 'overcome by men' refers to being defeated, humiliated, or controlled by others, which can also stem from financial distress. By reciting this, we ask Allah not only to relieve us of current debt but also to protect us from falling into such situations in the future, granting us dignity and independence.

Source & Authentication

‘Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to supplicate: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and from being overcome by men.' She said: 'We said to him: 'O Messenger of Allah, how much you seek refuge from the burden of debt!' He said: 'Indeed, when a man is in debt, he talks and lies, and he makes a promise and breaks it.'
