Dua for a Clear Conscience and Peace of Mind While in Debt

Debt
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the oppression of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min al-hammi wal-hazan, wa a'udhu bika min al-'ajzi wal-kasal, wa a'udhu bika min al-jubni wal-buhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.

When to Read

This dua is incredibly comprehensive and can be recited at any time, especially when you feel the weight of debt pressing down on your conscience, causing worry or distress. It's particularly powerful to say it during the times when dua is more likely to be answered, such as after the obligatory prayers, in the last third of the night, or between the Adhan and Iqamah.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, focusing on the meaning of each phrase. Understand that while seeking Allah's help through dua, we must also take practical steps towards resolving our debts. This involves planning, working diligently, and seeking honest means to repay what is owed. This dua isn't just about avoiding the negative feelings associated with debt; it's about seeking Allah's protection from the very causes and consequences of overwhelming debt and the helplessness it can bring.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication offers profound peace by seeking Allah's protection from a range of debilitating emotional and practical states. Specifically concerning debt, it asks for refuge from 'ghalabatid-dayn' (being overcome by debt) and 'qahrir-rijal' (the oppression of men, often interpreted as being harassed or overcome by creditors or those who have power over you due to debt). By reciting this, you are not just wishing for the debt to disappear, but for Allah to shield your heart from the worry it causes and protect you from circumstances that could worsen your situation. It helps cultivate patience and resilience, fostering a clear conscience by acknowledging Allah as the ultimate source of relief and protection.

Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri: The Prophet (ﷺ) entered the Masjid one day. He saw a man from among the Ansar called Abu Umamah. He asked: 'What is the matter with you that I see you sitting in the Masjid during the time of prayer?' He said: 'O Messenger of Allah! It is worry and debts.' He said: 'Shall I not teach you a saying which, if you say it, Allah will remove your worry and pay your debt for you?' He said: 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah!' He said: 'Say in the morning and in the evening: Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min al-hammi wal-hazan, wa a'udhu bika min al-'ajzi wal-kasal, wa a'udhu bika min al-jubni wal-buhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the oppression of men.) Abu Umamah said: 'I did that, and Allah removed my worry and paid my debt.'
