Seeking Allah's Protection for Our Children from Environmental Dangers

Children
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 3893

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and His punishment, and from the evil of His creation, and from the suggestions of devils and from their presence.

A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min ghadabihi wa 'iqabihi, wa min sharri 'ibadihi, wa min hamazatish-shayateeni wa an yahdhurun.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is perfect for invoking Allah's protection for your children whenever you feel they might be exposed to environmental hazards. This could be when sending them out to play, especially in areas with potential risks (like traffic, crowded places, or areas with pollution), before they travel, or even as a daily morning protection ritual. Recite it with sincere intention and focus on the meaning.

How to Read

This is a powerful supplication that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us. It's best recited with sincerity and a clear intention of seeking Allah's refuge. You can place your hand on your child's head while reciting it, or recite it and then blow gently onto them (a practice of seeking protection mentioned in other narrations). Make sure to pronounce the Arabic words clearly, understanding that the power lies in the words of Allah and your earnest plea.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses seeking refuge from many unseen and seen evils. By seeking refuge in Allah's 'perfect words' (which refers to His creation and His commands), we are asking for protection from dangers that stem from His creation, His decrees (anger/punishment), and the malevolent influence of Shaytan. For our children, this means protection from physical dangers in their environment, from harmful influences, and from anything that could lead them astray. It's a way of clothing them in spiritual armor provided by Allah, reminding us that ultimate protection is only with Him.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to seek refuge for Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them) with these words: 'I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from every devil and every beast, and from every evil eye.' Then he would say: 'Your father (meaning Ibrahim, peace be upon him) used to seek refuge with these words for Isma'il and Ishaq (peace be upon them).'
