Children
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2710

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the demolition of Your blessings, the reversal of Your well-being, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all that You decree. I seek refuge in You from the trials of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of wealth, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of poverty, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of the Dajjal. O Allah, cleanse my heart with water, snow, and hail. Purify my heart from sins just as You purified the white garment from dirt. And distance me from my sins just as You distanced the East and the West. O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and contentment.

Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda, wat-tuqa, wal-'afafa, wal-ghina.

When to Read

This comprehensive supplication is excellent for parents to recite for their children, especially during times of upbringing and education. It can be recited daily, perhaps after Fajr or Dhuhr prayer, or whenever you feel the need to seek Allah's protection for your child against arrogance and internalize humility. Making it a habit will imbue the child's environment with these noble values.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, directing your supplication towards Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala). You can gently remind your child of its meaning and importance, encouraging them to make similar supplications for themselves as they grow. Make du'a with your hands raised, facing the Qiblah if possible, and with a clear heart.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua, taught by our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, directly addresses the root of arrogance by seeking refuge in Allah from various trials, including those related to wealth and poverty which often fuel pride. It asks for purification of the heart, essential for cultivating true humility. By seeking guidance, piety, chastity, and contentment, we ask Allah to instill in our children the virtues that naturally counter arrogance and foster a deep sense of reliance on the Creator, rather than on oneself or worldly possessions. The Prophet ﷺ himself sought refuge in Allah from arrogance, teaching us its seriousness.

Source & Authentication

Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to teach them this invocation in the same way as he used to teach them a Surah of the Qur'an. He would say: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the torment of Hell, and I seek refuge in You from the torment of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of the Masih ad-Dajjal, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of life and death. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from sin and from debt." A man said to him: "O Messenger of Allah, how numerous are the things you seek refuge in from!" He said: "The believer seeks refuge in Allah from (every) thing that is dreadful."
