Virtues & Benefits
This comprehensive dua encapsulates three essential pillars for success in this life and the hereafter. Seeking 'beneficial knowledge' (`'ilman nafi'an`) helps us understand how to earn and spend our wealth Islamically. Asking for 'goodly provision' (`rizqan tayyiban`) ensures that our sustenance is pure, lawful, and brings blessings. Finally, requesting 'acceptable deeds' (`'amalan mutaqabbalan`) means that our hard work and efforts are acknowledged and rewarded by Allah, both in this world and the next. This dua reflects the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ habit of seeking comprehensive good in his supplications.
Source & Authentication
‘Umar bin Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: ‘The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to say these words in the morning: ‘O Allah, I ask You for Your guidance, piety, chastity, and richness.’ And he used to say in the evening: ‘O Allah, we have entered upon the evening from among Your creation and Your dominion, holding onto Your dominion and Your decree. We seek refuge in You from the sting of our work, and from seeking (our livelihood) apart from You. O Allah, bring us sustenance from You which is lawful and abundant, and not offensive. O Allah, You have indeed established for us our livelihood, so make us satisfied with it, and bless it, and compensate us for whatever we miss of it.’ This hadith is narrated slightly differently in Sahih Muslim, where the Prophet ﷺ taught Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) to say: 'O Allah, Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earth, Lord of the Mighty Throne, our Lord and the Lord of everything, Revealer of the Tawrat, the Injeel, and the Furqan, I seek refuge in You from the evil of every beast that You are seizing by its forelock. O Allah, You are the First, and there is nothing before You. You are the Last, and there is nothing after You. You are the Apparent, and there is nothing above You. You are the Hidden, and there is nothing beneath You. Settle our debt and enrich us from poverty.' And the part relevant to this entry is from another hadith where the Prophet ﷺ used to say when he woke up: 'O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, goodly provision, and acceptable deeds.' (Sahih Muslim 77)
