You can say it immediately upon discovering the loss, or regularly thereafter, especially during your daily prayers or before sleep.

How to Read

Make this dua after performing wudu (ablution) if possible, facing the Qiblah. Raise your hands, palms facing upwards, and supplicate to Allah. Recite it with a clear voice, focusing on the meaning and pouring out your heart. Believe that Allah, the Most Just, hears your plea and has the power to restore what was taken. You can repeat it multiple times for added emphasis and to deepen your connection with your Lord. While this specific dua is concise, you can also add other supplications asking for Allah's protection over your business and possessions, and for justice against those who wronged you, always maintaining a respectful and humble tone.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua directly calls upon Allah to restore what has been lost, reflecting a believer's ultimate reliance on their Creator. By turning to Allah in times of hardship and injustice, you are seeking His divine intervention and justice. It helps to calm your heart, reducing anxiety and frustration. This supplication is a beautiful expression of Tawakkul (trust in Allah) andSabr (patience), knowing that He is the ultimate disposer of affairs. Reciting it can bring peace of mind, strengthen your faith, and open avenues for the property to be recovered through means you may not have expected.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'A traveler lost his mount. He searched for it until he was exhausted. Then he rested in the shade of a tree. While he was in that state, he suddenly saw his mount standing beside him. So he took hold of its reins. Then he said: O Allah, You are my servant and I am Your Lord. He made a mistake due to extreme joy.' Another narration states: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'What makes you do so?' The man said: 'I swear by Allah, You are my Lord and I am Your servant.' The Prophet (peace be upon him) laughed and said: 'Indeed, Allah is happier with the repentance of His servant than a man who lost his camel in a desert, and then found it.' (The context of the lost property dua comes from the general principle of asking Allah for restoration of lost items, and specific duas for lost items exist. The most direct applicable dua is often cited as: 'Allahumma rudd 'alayya dâllatî' meaning 'O Allah, restore to me what I have lost,' which is found in Sunan Abi Dawud 5089, narrated by 'Abdullah bin Ja'far as being taught by the Prophet (peace be upon him) for lost items.)
