What to Say When Eating Food Offered by a Disbeliever

Before Eating
Sahih HadithSunan Abu Dawud 3767

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ

In the name of Allah.

Bismillah

When to Read

This is the recommended supplication to say before eating or drinking anything, regardless of who prepared the food or drink. If a disbeliever offers you food or drink, it is still sunnah to begin with 'Bismillah'.

How to Read

Recite 'Bismillah' clearly and with intention before taking the first bite or sip. It's a simple yet profound reminder to acknowledge Allah's blessings in the sustenance provided.

Virtues & Benefits

Saying 'Bismillah' before eating is a practice taught by our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It invokes Allah's name, seeking His blessing in the food and protection from any harm. It also serves as a reminder that all provisions come from Allah, even when offered by those who do not believe. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'When any one of you eats, he should say Bismillah, and if he forgets to say Bismillah at the beginning, he should say: Bismillah awwalahu wa akhirahu (In the name of Allah at the beginning and at the end).'
