Seeking Refuge from Hellfire Before Eating

Before Eating
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2044

اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيمَا رَزَقْتَنَا، وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا، وَارْحَمْنَا

O Allah, bless us in what You have provided us, forgive us, and have mercy upon us.

Allahumma barik lana fima razaqtana, waghfir lana, warhamna.

When to Read

This supplication is recited before beginning to eat, after reciting Bismillah. It's a beautiful reminder to acknowledge Allah's blessings and seek His forgiveness and mercy at the very start of partaking in sustenance.

How to Read

The intention should be pure, seeking Allah's pleasure. Recite the Arabic text clearly and with understanding of its meaning. It's best recited before taking the first bite, often accompanied by saying 'Bismillah' first.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses gratitude for provision ('barik lana fima razaqtana'), acknowledging that all sustenance is from Allah. It also seeks His forgiveness ('waghfir lana') and mercy ('warhamna'), recognizing our human shortcomings and dependence on His grace. While not directly mentioning hellfire, the act of seeking forgiveness and mercy before engaging in a basic human need like eating is a profound way to stay mindful of our ultimate accountability and the importance of seeking refuge in Allah from all forms of harm, including the Fire.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that when the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was raised to (the highest degree of proximity to Allah), he said: 'O my Lord, I ask You for the means to obtain what is enjoyed by the inhabitants of Paradise and what is safe from the Fire. And I seek refuge in You from the Fire, and from what is close to it of evil deeds.' When he was brought down, he said: 'O my Lord, I ask You for what is good that which is with You, and I seek refuge in You from evil, and I ask You for the ability to love the poor, and for forgiveness for myself and for the Muslims what You have brought down with me.' A man asked him: 'What did Gabriel bring you?' He said: 'He said: O Muhammad, whatever servant of Allah says at the time of the evening: "Allah is sufficient for me, there is none worthy of worship but He, in Him I have placed my trust and He is the Lord of the Throne of the Great Throne." Allah will suffice him from what worries him of the matters of this world and the Hereafter.' When asked about this, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'This is a narration from Abu Dawud, and it is found in Sahih Muslim (2708) with a slightly different wording and it is as follows: It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: ' The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ' Whoever says: *A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq* (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created), then no harm will befall him until he leaves that place.' [Sahih Muslim 2708] The narration about the dua before eating (Allahumma barik lana fima razaqtana, waghfir lana, warhamna) is found in Sahih Muslim (2044) as part of a longer hadith concerning eating with companions. The context there is generally about seeking blessings and forgiveness. The specific dua for seeking refuge from hellfire is often cited separately, though the mindfulness of Allah's mercy and forgiveness before eating fosters a broader sense of seeking refuge from His punishment.
