بِسْمِ اللَّهِ
In the name of Allah
Bismillah
When to Read
This is a fundamental Sunnah practice. You should say 'Bismillah' before starting any meal or even a snack. It's not just for the main dishes; even if you're just having a date or a sip of water, remembering Allah's name is a beautiful way to begin.
How to Read
Simply utter 'Bismillah' clearly before you take the first bite or sip. It's a simple phrase, but its impact is profound. If you forget, say it as soon as you remember, even if you've already taken a few bites. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that if someone forgets, they should say 'Bismillahi awwaluhu wa akhiruhu' (In the name of Allah, at the beginning and at the end of it).
Virtues & Benefits
Remembering Allah's name before eating ensures that the food is blessed. Shaytan (Satan) does not share in the meal when Allah's name is mentioned. This practice also cultivates gratitude, reminding us that every provision comes from Allah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'Indeed, Allah is pleased with His servant who praises Him when he eats and praises Him when he drinks.' (Sahih Muslim 2030). Furthermore, forgetting to say Bismillah can lead to the food being associated with Shaytan.

Narrated Umar bin Abi Salama: I was a boy under the care of Allah's Messenger ﷺ and my hand used to go around [the dish] in the platter. So Allah's Messenger ﷺ said to me, 'O boy! Say Bismillah and eat with your right hand and eat what is in front of you.' [Sahih al-Bukhari 5376]
