بِسْمِ اللَّهِ
In the name of Allah.
Bismillah
When to Read
This is the fundamental dua to recite before starting any meal. While it's a general practice before eating, it holds particular significance when you notice tendencies towards stubbornness or pride. It serves as a constant reminder of our dependence on Allah and our need for His blessings, even in the simple act of eating.
How to Read
Recite 'Bismillah' clearly before taking your first bite. It's a beautiful sunnah that connects us to Allah even before partaking in the sustenance He has provided. It's also recommended to recite it collectively if eating with family or friends, fostering a shared sense of gratitude and remembrance.
Virtues & Benefits
Reciting 'Bismillah' before eating is a direct Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It brings Allah's blessing (barakah) to the food, ensuring it nourishes not just the body but also the soul. It also acts as a spiritual shield, preventing Shaytan (Satan) from joining you in the meal or influencing your heart with negative traits like stubbornness and pride. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'When any one of you eats, he should say Bismillah, and if he forgets to say it at the beginning, he should say it when he remembers.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 5376). This hadith highlights its importance and the mercy of Allah in allowing us to seek His name even if we forget.
